Market Challenges: -

Water Management in Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells: In a PEM fuel cell, water is produced when chemical reactions occur in each cell. Net balancing of fuel cell stacks is one of the biggest challenges with PEMFC assemblies. Fuel cells tend to either flood or run dry depending on load and operating conditions. The proton conductivity and activation potential of the PEMFC are affected by the water content of the polymer membrane. Proton conductivity decreases when the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) is not sufficiently wetted, which in turn causes an increase in cell resistance.

If dehydration in fuel cells is inefficient, excess water can prevent the diffusion of reactants in the catalyst sites by flooding the electrodes, gas diffusion phonons or gas channels. Parameters such as current density, temperature, reagent flow rate, pressures, wetting, cell design, and component materials must be optimized to ensure membrane hydration. Wetting the reactive gas and the cathode reaction in PEM fuel cells produces water. This accumulation of water in the fuel cell can be mitigated by a gas diffusion layer, a flow channel or a heater. Correct network balance can increase fuel cell efficiency and power and maintain fuel cell stack longevity. Therefore, water management is an important design aspect of a fuel cell stack.

Regional Insights: -

In Europe, countries such as Germany and the UK are prioritizing hydrogen infrastructure and fuel cell applications in transport and energy storage, supported by strong government support. The Asia-Pacific region, particularly Japan and South Korea, is leading the way in the adoption of fuel cells, making significant investments in infrastructure and commercial use. Meanwhile, Australia and parts of the Middle East are focusing on hydrogen production and integration into clean energy solutions. Together, these areas are driving innovation in cost reduction, industry diversification and policy support, creating a competitive landscape for fuel cell technology worldwide. As each region leverages its strengths – be it technology development, regulatory support or infrastructure investment – the fuel cell market will continue to expand and move towards sustainable energy solutions worldwide.
